Grade 5 is where children stop copying answers…
and start asking “Why does this happen?”
That question matters.
Because today’s small experiments become tomorrow’s engineers, doctors, designers, and innovators.
Your child doesn’t need complicated machines yet.
They need hands-on discovery — projects that build confidence, curiosity, and direction.
Here are five simple science projects perfect for Grade 5 — all easy at home, exhibition-friendly, and quietly preparing kids for future STEM careers.
Parent Note
Your child already enjoys science projects — but interest fades if it isn’t guided.
Today’s small experiments can become tomorrow’s real skills in robotics, electronics, coding, and aeromodelling.Don’t wait for high school.

Project 1: Shadow Tracker Clock (Earth Rotation)
Materials
Stick or pencil, open sunlight area, chalk or marker, notebook, watch.
Steps
- Take a stick or pencil and place it upright on the ground.
- Choose a sunny outdoor spot where shadows are visible.
- Mark the tip of the shadow with chalk.
- Write the time beside the mark.
- Wait 30–60 minutes.
- Mark the new shadow position.
- Write the new time beside it.
- Repeat this process 3–4 times during the day.
- Join all marks using a pencil.
- Observe how the shadow changes direction.
- Draw the pattern in your notebook.
- Explain that Earth’s rotation causes this movement.
Project 2: Sound Cup Telephone
Materials
Two paper cups, long string, tape, pin.
Steps
- Make a small hole at the bottom of both cups.
- Pass string through both holes.
- Tie knots inside cups so string doesn’t slip.
- Stretch string tightly between two people.
- Speak into one cup.
- Listen from the other cup.
- Try whispering.
- Try shouting softly.
- Loosen the string and test again.
- Observe sound quality changes.
- Draw diagram in notebook.
- Explain vibration transfer.
Project 3: Paper Bridge Engineering
Materials
Paper sheets, two books, coins.
Steps
- Place two books 15 cm apart.
- Lay paper flat across books.
- Add coins one by one.
- Count how many coins it holds.
- Remove coins.
- Fold paper into triangle shape.
- Place folded bridge again.
- Add coins slowly.
- Compare strength.
- Try accordion fold next.
- Record best design.
- Explain how shape adds strength.
Project 4: Walking Water Colors
Materials
6 cups, water, food coloring, paper towels.
Steps
- Arrange cups in a line.
- Fill alternate cups with water.
- Add different colors.
- Leave empty cups between colored ones.
- Fold towels into strips.
- Place towel ends into cups.
- Wait 30 minutes.
- Watch water climb paper.
- Observe color mixing.
- Take photos.
- Write observations.
- Explain capillary action.
Project 5: Floating Egg Density Test
Materials
Egg, glass, water, salt, spoon.
Steps
- Fill glass with water.
- Drop egg inside.
- Observe sinking.
- Remove egg.
- Add two spoons salt.
- Stir until dissolved.
- Place egg again.
- Watch it rise.
- Add more salt.
- Compare height.
- Record results.
- Explain density change.
