1. Photosynthesis in Action

Concept: Proves that plants make food in the presence of sunlight.
Materials:

  • Alcohol (ethanol)
  • Iodine solution
  • Hot water
  • Beaker, test tube, burner/stove
  • Forceps

Steps:

  1. Select a healthy plant and cover half of one leaf tightly using black paper.
  2. Keep the plant in sunlight for 24 hours.
  3. Pluck the covered leaf carefully using forceps.
  4. Boil the leaf in hot water for 2 minutes to soften tissues.
  5. Transfer the leaf into alcohol placed inside a beaker (water bath method).
  6. Heat until green color disappears completely.
  7. Dip the leaf again in warm water to soften it.
  8. Place on a plate and spread flat.
  9. Add iodine drops evenly.
  10. Compare blue-black areas with pale sections and record results.

Observation:
The green part (exposed to light) turns blue-black, while the covered part does not.

Learning:
Plants produce starch (food) in the presence of sunlight.

2. Transpiration Experiment

Concept: Shows how plants lose water through leaves.
Materials:

  • Small potted plant with green leaves
  • Transparent polythene bag
  • Rubber band/string

Steps:

  1. Choose a small potted plant with fresh green leaves.
  2. Place plant in direct sunlight.
  3. Cover one leafy branch with transparent polythene.
  4. Tie tightly using string or rubber band.
  5. Leave undisturbed for 3–4 hours.
  6. Observe inner surface of bag.
  7. Touch droplets gently to confirm moisture.
  8. Remove bag and compare with uncovered leaves.
  9. Draw diagram of setup.
  10. Write conclusion about water loss.

Observation:
Water droplets appear inside the bag.

Learning:
Water evaporates from leaves (transpiration), helping in nutrient transport and cooling.

3. Medicinal Plant Survey

Concept: Explore common plants used in home remedies.
Materials:

  • Notebook
  • Camera/phone (optional)
  • Access to garden/local nursery

Steps:

  1. List plants like tulsi, aloe vera, neem, turmeric, ginger.
  2. Record their uses:
  3. Tulsi: cures cough and cold.
    Neem: antibacterial, good for skin.
    Aloe Vera: heals burns and improves digestion.
    Turmeric: antiseptic, boosts immunity.

4. Effect of Light on Plant Growth (Phototropism)

Materials:

  7. Measure angle of bending.
  8. Open box and compare straight vs bent growth.
  9. Draw before–after diagrams.

5. Plants as Natural Air Purifiers

Concept: Proves plants improve air quality.
Materials:

  • Two transparent jars
  • Small plant (money plant or spider plant works well)
  • Incense stick

Steps:

  1. Take two clear jars.
  2. Place plant inside one jar.
  3. Leave second jar empty.
  4. Light incense stick and fill both jars with smoke.
  5. Close lids tightly.
  6. Wait 15–20 minutes.
  7. Compare clarity of air inside jars.
  8. Note which jar clears faster.
