It was a busy Monday morning. Meera, a curious school student, was travelling in a bus with her mother. The bus was crowded, and Meera was standing near the door, holding the support rod tightly.

Suddenly, the bus started moving forward.

Meera felt her body jerk backward.

“Mom! Why did I fall backward when the bus moved forward?” she asked, surprised.

A few minutes later, the bus stopped suddenly at a signal.

This time, Meera felt herself moving forward.

“Now I’m pushed forward! What is happening?” she wondered.

Her mother smiled and said,
“What you are experiencing is called Inertia.

 What Is Inertia?

When Meera reached school, her science teacher explained it clearly.

Inertia is the tendency of an object to resist any change in its state of motion.

That means:

  • An object at rest wants to stay at rest
  • An object in motion wants to stay in motion

This idea was first explained by Sir Isaac Newton and is called Newton’s First Law of Motion.
